Who here would want to see a Golden Age Hawkman archive? I know I would. I love the character and it would be nice to read some of his older stories finally. It would be perfect for DC now that he's returned to the DCU. What do you say DC, any chance we can have a Golden Age Hawkman archive?

What does everyone else here think? Who wants to see DC put a Golden Age Hawkman archive out?

I probably wouldn't get it, but I'd be more likely to get a GA Hawkman than the SA hawkman. I never much cared for Thanagar.

I would love to see GA Hawkman #1 -- and I am holding out hope that it will be the remaining "unknown" Golden Age #1 this year. This series would have a lot of obvious fan appeal with its excellent Moldoff and early Kubert art -- some of the best of the Golden Age superheroes. And the success of the current day Hawkman series creates a natural tie-in....

I'd prefer GA Sandman, but yeah, I'd get GA Hawkman like a shot.

Many of the DC golden age characters (as opposed to Fawcett or Quality) have the disadvantage that their earliest stories weren't strongly illustrated. This makes early volumes unappealing to some buyers, and therefore kills the chances of the series going on to the later better illustrated volumes. Two exceptions are Hawkman and Starman. I think a golden age Hawkman vol. 1 would actually sell better than g.a. Flash vol. 1.

Oh, much better.
I still think it's going to be the as-yet unannounced Golden Age volume one for later this year.

Who is it that does the art for Hawkman in the early All Star archives? He's not very good and his wings look more like a velvet cape. Wouldnt the Golden Age Hawkman archives be illustrated by the same person?

I forgot to take out the garbage, so I told my wife I would wear this mark of shame on my sig:
I am not a man, but a tiny weakling in the face of the GREATNESS of my gorgeous wife!

Count me in. The original Hawkman has been high on my DC Archives wish-list for years now.

You're probably thinking of Sheldon Moldoff. He did most of the Hawkman stories for the first sixty or so issues of Flash Comics. He's actually well thought of, as Golden Age artists go, although he relied very heavily on "swipes"--figures or panels copied from other artists (in the case of Moldoff's Hawkman, most of the swipes were from Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon or Hal Foster's Tarzan).
It'll be a five-volume archive series, and what I'm really looking forward to is the final two volumes, which will be mostly the work of a youngster named Joe Kubert.

Count me in on this one. I always liked Shelly's EARLY Hawk stories. I remember that when we had Joe Kubert at a Kansas City Convention years ago, I had him sign the Hawk chapter in All-Star #33, and I mentioned that I really liked the way he drew it. He said thanks, but he hated the early stuff and much prefered his silver age version much better!

I can imagine that he finds his earlier Hawkman work crude, but I think the later Golden Age Kubert Hawkman stuff, especially from the last few issues of Flash Comics, is some of the most beautiful comic book work I've ever seen. He's got nothing to be ashamed of there.

You have to ask? Of course I'm in. This will probably be the second best #1 from this period (behind Starman).

You have to ask? It's coming, we just don't know when.

My ideal schedule obviously depends on whether or not DC expands. However, assuming that the number of Golden Age slots remains about the same, I'd rather get All-Star every year followed by Hawkman every year. I think Hawkman will be one of the better selling series and could be used to shrink the gap between SA and GA sales.[/B][/QUOTE]

I've read a similar comment from him before. I think he is making a mistake by comparing his later work to his earlier work. When his early work is compared to the work of others at the same time, his is clearly near the top. Wasn't he just a kid at the time?
